Invoering van de Europa-serie

De bankbiljetten van de Europa-serie worden geleidelijk ingevoerd over een periode van meerdere jaren, in oplopende volgorde. De eerste drie bankbiljetten van de nieuwe serie, die van €5, €10 en €20, zijn in respectievelijk 2013, 2014 en 2015 in omloop gekomen. Het nieuwe biljet van €50 is op 5 juli 2016 onthuld en komt in april 2017 in omloop.

Vernieuwd ontwerp, verbeterde veiligheid

De nieuwe bankbiljetten zijn het resultaat van een ontwikkeling. De nieuwe bankbiljetten bevatten nog steeds het “tijdperken en stijlen”-ontwerp van de eerste serie, maar wel zijn zij licht aangepast om het gebruik van verbeterde echtheidskenmerken mogelijk te maken. Hierdoor zijn ze tevens gemakkelijk te onderscheiden van de bankbiljetten van de eerste serie. Reinhold Gerstetter, een zelfstandig bankbiljettenontwerper uit Berlijn, is uitgekozen om het ontwerp van de eurobankbiljetten op te frissen. 

Eenvoudig te zien, en nóg veiliger

De nieuwe echtheidskenmerken van de Europa-serie zijn gemakkelijk op de bankbiljetten te vinden en maken de nieuwe bankbiljetten nóg beter beschermd tegen vervalsing.


Geleidelijke invoering

De invoering van de bankbiljetten van de Europa-serie zal om verschillende redenen anders zijn dan de overgang op de euro in 2002.

De verschillende coupures zullen op verschillende tijdstippen worden uitgegeven, waardoor de invoering van de hele serie meerdere jaren in beslag zal nemen, anders dan het geval was bij de "big-bang"-overgang op de euro in 2002.

Gezien de geleidelijke invoering van de nieuwe bankbiljetten en gezien het feit dat elk land zijn eigen “geldcyclus” heeft, zullen de bankbiljetten niet in het gehele eurogebeid op hetzelfde moment verschijnen.

Parallelle circulatie, onbeperkte geldigheidsduur

Om de resterende voorraden ervan op te gebruiken, zullen in veel landen van het eurogebied de bankbiljetten van de eerste serie gedurende een aantal maanden naast de nieuwe biljetten in omloop blijven worden gebracht. De twee series zullen tegelijkertijd als wettig betaalmiddel in omloop zijn. De datum waarop de eerste serie ophoudt wettig betaalmiddel te zijn zal ruim van tevoren worden aangekondigd; de bankbiljetten van de eerste serie zullen echter voor een onbeperkte periode kunnen worden ingewisseld bij de nationale centrale banken van het Eurosysteem.

We will be liable for any damages incurred by the ECB should we not act in accordance with this Letter of Intent. We also understand that the ECB reserves the right to terminate our membership at any time.
